Government shores up Hundertwasser build
It’s official, Northland has made it happen! The Hundertwasser Art Centre with Wairau Maori Art Gallery will become a reality with the Government pledging a time limited conditional offer to grant up to $3 million in support of the project.
Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage Maggie Barry made the announcement on June 16. This brings the total Government contribution up to $7m for a project expected to contribute $26m into the regional economy every year.
The news comes just days after the NZ Lottery Grants Board announced a grant of $3.5m which helped meet the project referendum goal.
The funding is the culmination of many years’ hard work by volunteers.
HAC project director Andrew Garrett says he team is ecstatic with the news, and can’t wait to celebrate with the community.
‘‘We are beyond thrilled to conquer this hurdle. Of course, we now have the full build to manage and complete, but right now is a time of celebration.
‘‘We want to focus on the incredible community contribution which is why we invite all of Northland to join us in Hundertwasser Day on June 24 at the Town Basin Canopy Bridge [1pm-3pm].’’
