Have you checked out the price of avocados lately?

Avocado prices have surged in recent months due to a shortage in supply. They’re currently $6.50 each at Countdown and there are reports of them selling at $7.50 in some parts of the country.

They’re like nuggets of gold now; everyone knows their health benefits. It’s getting desperate and not just in NZ.

In the US three men have been arrested after the theft of NZD $411,000 worth of avocados. Police reckon they were stealing and selling them to unsuspecting customers for several months.

Up here in the Far North we can dodge these ludicrous prices somewhat. We’ve got farmers markets that price them realistically, and generous neighbours and friends.

Hubby and I planted two avocado trees last year, so we still have a few years before we’ll benefit. I wish those kids that rode their bikes up our driveway, their backpacks laden with bags of five for $5, would come back!
