Youth Councillors inspired

Far North Youth Councillors have been inspired to change lives after attending the Festival for the Future, New Zealand’s largest annual youth development event.

The event, held in Auckland on August 4-6, was part of the Future Leaders programme led by the Inspiring Stories Trust, a component in the Mayors Taskforce for Jobs initiative. Ten young leaders from the council were joined by scholarship recipients, and by Leonard Parangi, the Far North District Council’s delegate to the Tuia programme, which focuses on Maori youth development.

During the annual event, youth councillors attended inspirational speeches, workshops and panel discussions on topics such as the future of education, employment and the environment.

Youth Councillor Blair KapaPeters says she had an awesome time.

‘‘I am already missing the inspirational talks and am keen to attend again.’’

Fellow Youth Councillor Aroha Puru described the korero as ‘‘powerful’’ and both young leaders said they had been inspired to create positive change in their own lives and the lives of other Far North young people.
