I always look forward to the first Tuesday in November.

I know the Melbourne Cup isn’t typically ‘our day’ but the race that stops a nation has a special place in my heart.

For many years, attending the big race was on my ‘bucket list’.

I was overjoyed to tick it off in 2008 when Viewed stormed home to win, giving legendary trainer Bart Cummings his 12th Melbourne Cup win.

That day, like everyone else, I’d dressed up.

I put on a dress, heels and a fascinator and joined the crowds on the train to Flemington.

I sipped champagne while admiring the horses strut around the birdcage.

Drunks aside, it was a special day.

Special for the magnificent thoroughbreds, special for the fashion, special for the courageous, human stories behind the winners and losers.

So next Tuesday, you can bet I’ll be having a flutter on the horses, and racing home from work to watch the action unfold on the telly.
