It’s that time of year again, when we’re all starting to think about Christmas, what to buy for family and friends, and perhaps making plans for a holiday.

But spare a thought for the thousands of children who have a pretty miserable time. Foster Hope Northland says the added stress of Christmas on some families means there are more children coming into their care.

It’s estimated there are around 5000 foster children in New Zealand, with Northland the third highest area for fostering in the country. When they’re picked up from sometimes dangerous homes, they often only have the clothes on their backs.

Foster Hope does a fantastic job helping those kids, providing a backpack of pyjamas, toys and toothbrushes to each child that gets rehomed.

They also do a Christmas gift drive. There are numerous dropoff points in Northland. Turn to page 6 to read the full story and find out how you can help.

Let’s put a smile on those kids’ faces and brighten up their Christmas a little.
