Motorcycle run to collect toys

Northern News - - YOUR LOCAL NEWS - BAYLEY MOOR

Motorcycles are set to roar through Moerewa and Kawakawa to collect Christmas toys for local youth.

Up to 30 riders from the Tumeke Motorcycle and Car Club in collaboration with All for Heart, a group which helps to feed and support children and their families, will collect unwrapped Christmas presents for toddlers through to young teens.

The Moerewa and Kawakawa Toy Run is on November 26 from 1pm, and will begin from Otiria Rd in Moerewa, collecting toys and clothes along the main streets through to Bay of Islands College.

Tumeke Motorcycle and Car Club spokesman Wiremu Keretene says the club look to support community events, and have been involved with a previous toy run in Kaikohe, and the RATS (Riders Against Teen Suicide) movement.

‘‘Moerewa has had some motorcycle clubs here which haven’t shown positive actions in the community, we hope to break that stereotype,’’ Keretene says.

‘‘One of our main kaupapa for starting the club was to be positive male role models - that rode motorcycles without being affiliated to gangs - for our youth especially our young male youth.’’

The club started in 2015 and has members from Kaitaia, Whangarei and Auckland, with the main membership base in Moerewa.

All for Heart’s Erika Kihau approached the club, because she had heard of other bike crews taking part in successful toy runs.

‘‘I was thinking about what we could do for Christmas and I know some of the bikie crews do toy runs and I thought I could use a local group, and it is good for the kids to see people driving bikes that are not in gangs,’’ Kihau says.

‘‘I hope the toys will make the kids a bit happier, because a lof of them won’t be getting Christmas.’’

Community members have nominated deserving children to All For Heart, who will package up the presents along with food and deliver them personally to each family.

‘‘A lot of the families we are helping, something has happened to them - the parents might have passed away or the kids are living with their grandparents,’’ Kihau says.

‘‘Hopefully it lifts their spirits to know someone cares.’’

Kihau thanks the Tumeke club and hopes the event will happen every year.
