Good luck Special Olympic swim team!
Far North Special Olympics athletes are excited to be heading off to the Special Olympics National Summer Games later this month.
The Bay of Islands swim team have had their final full team practice session at Kawakawa Pool. They have got a couple more individual sessions and then the swim team along with the equestrian team, coaches and carers, fly to Wellington for the games which run from November 27 to December 1.
Swim coach Karen Markin says they’re all really excited about the trip. A Bay of Islands Special Olympics Givealittle page has been set up to help them pay for incidental expenses.
In October, the athletes, from Kerikeri, Kaikohe and Kaitaia, joined with police for a torch relay to raise awareness and funds for the trip.
The team have had some funding and sponsorship but there are still a lot of incidentals for them to pay for,Markin says. ‘‘It’s a huge experience for them, not only such a prestigious event, but also being away from home for so long. Some of them have never flown anywhere before either, so the excitement starts with the plane journey.’’
The swim athletes [pictured] are: Jazzy Lawrence, Zadkeil Beazley-Tango, Kelsey Heta, Sarasin Ben, Te Ariki Beckham, Te Waipuke Tohu, Denise Cameron, Aroha Morgan, Adam Horsfall, Rachel Harvie, George King, Lani Wallace, Christopher Newhouse and Daniel Casbolt.
