North Canty motorhome club

North Canterbury is home to hundreds of motorhomes and now has its own club.

Tuahiwi’s Bob Newby is the inaugural chairperson for the new North Canterbury Area, which covers the region from the Waimakariri River to the Conway River.

Newby said some North Canterbury members of the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association (NZMCA) decided it was time to have a localised connection so petitioned the board of the NZMCA to form the new area.

The Canterbury Area was becoming too large, with over 4000 members and with the North Canterbury Area having around 1200 members, the NZMCA granted the proposal to split from the wider Canterbury area and form the new organisation – the 26th in New Zealand.

‘‘The aims of the new area will be to promote activities for all members, young and old, so that they can have a range of enjoyable experiences with like minded friends using their recreational vehicles,’’ Newby said.

Still setting up the organisation, Newby said he hoped to have a large number of members at the inaugural meeting on Saturday (September 2) at the Kaiapoi Working Men’s Club at 2pm. Newby said the new group will also make contact with the Waimakariri and Hurunui councils regarding facilities members can use.
