Grotto fundraiser forced to cancel
Organisers of the popular Ashgrove School Santa’s Grotto have made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s event due to a lack of support.
Grotto committee chair Vanessa Chapman said it was hugely disappointing given the amount of work which had already gone in to organising it, however without enough support, both from the school and wider community, it was just not feasible.
‘‘Part of the reason is that we have just not been able to establish the size of committee we’ve had in the past,’’ she said.
‘‘It’s one of the biggest annual fundraisers for the school so it does take a lot of organising.’’
The committee is normally hard at work from February to December to pull of the 10-day event, however with numbers dwindling from 12 to five it was proving too much for the remaining members.
‘‘We need about 10 people to make fortnightly or monthly meetings, but we also had difficulty getting sponsorship and funding this year. Once it becomes too stressful you have to be realistic about it.’’
Chapman remained optimistic about the future, provided more people came on board.
The grotto has raised close to $60,000 for the school over the five years it has been running, as well as attracting an estimated 25,000 people in that time.
There will be no Santa’s grotto for Ashgrove School this year due to a lack of support.
