Rennie goal earns Pride a point
Waimak United’s Gabi Rennie scored the equaliser as the Canterbury United Pride fought back from 0-2 down to secure a 2-2 draw with Northern in the National Women’s Football League in Auckland on Sunday.
After Rennie’s finish in the 61st minute, the Pride will be wondering how they didn’t go on and win. They hit the woodwork four times and were also thwarted on several occasions by goalkeeper Anna Leat, who made a number of fine saves.
The hosts took the lead after 18 minutes and then made it 2-0 in the 41st minute. Canterbury took control early in the second half and Annalie Longo sent a curling free kick into the top-left corner from just outside the box in the 58th minute. Longo then set up Rennie with a ball in from the left and the Rangiora teenager made it 2-2 with just under half an hour to play.
From there, it was the Pride who looked the more likely, with their best chance coming in the 73rd minute. Rennie got in behind and found Longo, who hit the bar, with the ball then falling to Waimak United’s Macey Fraser, who had her shot tipped onto the crossbar by Leat.
