Drag race for Rockabilly
Don your dresses for Rockabilly Show and Shine.
This year’s Rockabilly Show and Shine will feature a brand new event - the inaugural Drag Race.
Event organiser Robbie Baigent said the idea was to get the guys into the girls dresses and wigs and have a bit of fun.
‘‘There will be a running race around or through the event, and there may or many not be obstacles in the way.’’
He said the annual Belle and Beau was a more more serious event and the Drag Race was created to add something a bit more fun for the crowd and to get some laughs.
‘‘We’ve got some great prizes – the winner can choose from a $500 window tint voucher from North Canterbury Tinting and Vinyl or a $500 air brushing voucher from Insane Customs Airbrushing and Pinstriping.’’
Baigent said he’s got about a dozen competitors set to go, but would like to see another ten or so join them. ’’No experience necessary,’’ he said.
The Drag Race is expected to get underway around midday, with the Belle and Beau competition happening right afterward.
Baigent said a pre-event cruise will leave Bishopdale at 6.30pm and end at the New Brighton slow road and pedestrian mall. ’’We’re expecting around 100 or more cars to come along, but you never know. It often depends on the weather,’’ he said. The Pistons will be playing in the mall and there will be family entertainment provided.
Saturday will see cars, live music from local Rockabilly band Candy and the Rockets, and Backseat Bandits from Hamilton along with plenty of kids entertainment and around 100 market stalls.
An evening of Rockabilly follows the event at the Speights Ale House in Ferrymead, featuring Rockabilly band Boom Boom Deluxe from Auckland. Tickets for that still available through Eventbrite or on the day - $30 per head including supper.
