Quan­tock de­fends Cust ti­tle

Ohoka’s David Quan­tock de­fended his Cust Rally Sprint ti­tle in on Sun­day.

Quan­tock (Mit­subishi Evo 8) took out fastest time of the day from Christchurch’s Josh Marston and Mike Tall.

Marston (Holden Ba­rina AP4) led the field of 44 driv­ers with an open­ing run of 2 min­utes 12.03 sec­onds. Quan­tock went al­most 4 sec­onds faster in the se­cond round to hit the lead, with Marston drop­ping to fourth over­all.

The de­fend­ing cham­pion went even quicker third time around, clock­ing 2 mins 7.18s. Marston pro­duced a much quicker drive but couldn’t quite match Quan­tock, with a 2mins 7.37s.

Tall (Mit­subishi Mi­rage) was third in 2mins 7.41s. Ran­giora’s Matt Sum­mer­field (2mins 8.88s) rounded out the top 5.

Waikuku driver Jonothan Tay­lor (Toy­ota Corolla) won the 1300cc and un­der class with a 2mins 27.76s ef­fort. Sefton’s David Bir­kett (Toy­ota Levin) won the 1300-1600cc class in 2mins 26.58s and the 1600-2000c class was won by Kaik­oura’s Re­gan Ross (Ford Es­cort).

Cust was a warm-up event for many driv­ers with the MRF Tyres Main­land Rally Series kick­ing off this week­end in Grey­mouth, the first of seven rounds.

Round 2 is the Otago Rally which is the open­ing round of the New Zealand Rally Cham­pi­onship.
