Quantock defends Cust title
Ohoka’s David Quantock defended his Cust Rally Sprint title in on Sunday.
Quantock (Mitsubishi Evo 8) took out fastest time of the day from Christchurch’s Josh Marston and Mike Tall.
Marston (Holden Barina AP4) led the field of 44 drivers with an opening run of 2 minutes 12.03 seconds. Quantock went almost 4 seconds faster in the second round to hit the lead, with Marston dropping to fourth overall.
The defending champion went even quicker third time around, clocking 2 mins 7.18s. Marston produced a much quicker drive but couldn’t quite match Quantock, with a 2mins 7.37s.
Tall (Mitsubishi Mirage) was third in 2mins 7.41s. Rangiora’s Matt Summerfield (2mins 8.88s) rounded out the top 5.
Waikuku driver Jonothan Taylor (Toyota Corolla) won the 1300cc and under class with a 2mins 27.76s effort. Sefton’s David Birkett (Toyota Levin) won the 1300-1600cc class in 2mins 26.58s and the 1600-2000c class was won by Kaikoura’s Regan Ross (Ford Escort).
Cust was a warm-up event for many drivers with the MRF Tyres Mainland Rally Series kicking off this weekend in Greymouth, the first of seven rounds.
Round 2 is the Otago Rally which is the opening round of the New Zealand Rally Championship.
