Weedons down Sefton to finish top
An outstanding unbroken eighth wicket partnership saw Weedons tip over defending champions Sefton in the CRV Ambreed Country Premier One Day cricket competition on Saturday. The win had Weedons, beaten finalists a year ago, complete an unbeaten topfour round and now host LeestonSouthbridge in the semi-finals, while Sefton will host Cheviot.
At Weedons Domain on Saturday, the hosts fought back from the brink of defeat to snatch victory. Sefton’s Lance Taylor made 52 on a wicket that was difficult after rain during the week as the visitors made 143 inside 42 overs.
In reply, Sefton reduced Weedons to 87/8 in the 34th over. However, Josh Watson (33) and Jack Parker (29) put together an unbeaten 58 runs to see their side home with two overs to spare.
Backing up from their Twenty20 win the night before, Cheviot had a 74-run win over Leeston Southbridge at Leeston. After being sent into bat Cheviot made 207/7. Will Hamilton made 60 and Jack Harris finished unbeaten on 57.
Cheviot had the hosts 20/2 before Liam O’Sullivan and Dougald Munro steadied the ship. When Munro was removed for 40, they went from 83/2 to be 95/5. O’Sullivan (58) batted on but quickly ran out of partners as Leeston-Southbridge was all out for 133.
In the bottom four, DarfieldSouth Malvern’s (DSM) meagre 105 proved 20 runs too many for a 10-man Southbrook at Darfield. Simon Edwards made 39 and a crucial 14 from number 10 Bodie Hawkins, as well as 25 extras, pushed DSM to 105. Luan Blom returned excellent figures of 5/19.
Jack Boyle (25) looked to anchor Southbrook’s chase but when he fell at 42/3, DSM took control and the wickets kept coming to be all out for 89.
Lincoln snuck past OxfordRangiora by one wicket in a lowscoring nail-biter on Sunday. Oxford-Rangiora were put into bat and rolled for 81 with Mark Elliott the main destroyer, claiming 4/7 off his seven overs. Sanjay Undre top scored with 22.
A middle order collapse at the hands of Mark Murphy (4/22) and Mitchell Power (2/14) reduced Lincoln to 63/9 before Jeremy Benton finished 22 not out to get Lincoln home.
In the semi-finals,DSM host Lincoln and Southbrook are at home to Oxford-Rangiora.
