Age no bar­rier for the game

Plenty of clas­sic rugby ac­tion has been on show at the Christchurch Casino Golden Oldies Sports Cel­e­bra­tion 2018.

The tour­na­ment be­ing run at Ha­gley Park is the sec­ond time the event has been run in Christchurch with the city first host­ing it back in 1995.

Or­gan­is­ers said the great weather that the re­gion has turned on has con­trib­uted to the ‘‘fan­tas­tic at­mos­phere’’ of the oc­ca­sion.

More than 100 rugby teams are tak­ing part in the event which has at­tracted teams from all over the world in­clud­ing Aus­tralia, Eng­land, Rus­sia USA, Brazil, Ar­gentina, Canada and of course New Zealand.

Teams from North Can­ter­bury have been act­ing as great am­bas­sadors for their clubs and prov­ing the love of the sport doesn’t de­crease at any age.

Amongst those com­pet­ing in the week long event in­clude: Amuri Rams, Ka­iapoi Kava­liers, Ox­ford Oldies, and Sara­cen Saggy Sacks. A ref­er­ees din­ner was held for the first time in the tour­na­ments his­tory to ac­knowl­edge the con­tri­bu­tion match of­fi­cials make to the tour­na­ments suc­cess and or­gan­is­ers.
