It was another good month for the new car industry, the best March result since 1984, and three per cent ahead of the same period last year. There were 12,110 new vehicles registered, comprising 8191 passenger cars, ahead of last March by 1.4 per cent, and 3919 commercials, the result the best ever for the month of March. The total was up nine per cent on March of last year. End of financial year deals were said to be a factor in the on-going rise of the market which is ahead of 2015 figures by three per cent year-to-date.
The overall market leader was Toyota (1850 units, 15 per cent market share) followed by Ford (1261 units, 10 per cent share) and then Mitsubishi (1029 units, eight per cent share).
Toyota also topped passenger car sales (999 units, 12 per cent) while Mazda continues to fire in this area (816 units, 10 per cent) topping Hyundai (731 units, nine per cent). It was also Toyota ahead in the commercial market, followed by Ford and then Mitsubishi.
The top sellers of the month were the Ford Ranger (661), Toyota Hilux (601), Mitsubishi Triton (462), Suzuki Swift (304), Toyota Corolla (302), Holden Colorado (263) and Mazda CX-5 (242).
The best performing segments of the month were 4x4 utes (13 per cent) followed by medium SUVs (12 per cent) and then light passenger cars, also on 12 per cent.
