It was another good month for the new car in­dus­try, the best March re­sult since 1984, and three per cent ahead of the same pe­riod last year. There were 12,110 new ve­hi­cles reg­is­tered, com­pris­ing 8191 pas­sen­ger cars, ahead of last March by 1.4 per cent, and 3919 com­mer­cials, the re­sult the best ever for the month of March. The to­tal was up nine per cent on March of last year. End of fi­nan­cial year deals were said to be a fac­tor in the on-go­ing rise of the mar­ket which is ahead of 2015 fig­ures by three per cent year-to-date.

The over­all mar­ket leader was Toy­ota (1850 units, 15 per cent mar­ket share) fol­lowed by Ford (1261 units, 10 per cent share) and then Mit­subishi (1029 units, eight per cent share).

Toy­ota also topped pas­sen­ger car sales (999 units, 12 per cent) while Mazda con­tin­ues to fire in this area (816 units, 10 per cent) top­ping Hyundai (731 units, nine per cent). It was also Toy­ota ahead in the com­mer­cial mar­ket, fol­lowed by Ford and then Mit­subishi.

The top sell­ers of the month were the Ford Ranger (661), Toy­ota Hilux (601), Mit­subishi Tri­ton (462), Suzuki Swift (304), Toy­ota Corolla (302), Holden Colorado (263) and Mazda CX-5 (242).

The best per­form­ing seg­ments of the month were 4x4 utes (13 per cent) fol­lowed by medium SUVs (12 per cent) and then light pas­sen­ger cars, also on 12 per cent.
