Be­fore the ad­vent of syn­thetic dyes, our an­ces­tors made do with the roots, shoots and fruits of plants in their back­yard. Nat­u­ral dyes were sourced from flow­ers, leaves, berries, bark, roots and the shells of nuts, though the three most com­monly used dye plants through­out his­tory were mad­der, woad and weld.
