Before the advent of synthetic dyes, our ancestors made do with the roots, shoots and fruits of plants in their backyard. Natural dyes were sourced from flowers, leaves, berries, bark, roots and the shells of nuts, though the three most commonly used dye plants throughout history were madder, woad and weld.
