Madder (Rubia tinctorum) produces a range of different reds – blood red, brick red, orange red and fiery red, as well as plums to near-black. The colour depends on the age of the root, how much is used, the temperature of the dye vat and the mineral content in the soil. Fresh root produces orange red; dried root gives a deeper red.
