WEAVING BASKETS

NZ Gardener - Gifts from the Gardens - - Crafts -

Harvest willow or other pliable branches (live dogwood or grapevine) in winter when the leaves have fallen. Pick a variety of stems; the thicker stems can be used for framework and the thinner, more flexible stems can be used for weaving. Use the freshly picked stems while they are still pliable. If using after they have dried, they will need to be soaked first. Weave a round base, then fold up the framework and tie at the top. Continue to weave thinner stems at the bottom to form a basket.
