Easy to build options
Redpath Greenhouses has been quietly developing its easy-build cold frames for the 2017 / 2018 seasons.
Spokesman Glen Williams says “we have seen increased demand for simple type shelters, that are speedy to erect, low cost, and that do not require concrete to secure them to the ground”. The easy build cold frames come in a standard width of five metres and may be built to any length. They may also be built on existing undulating ground with little or no site works required.
Glen says that “most of our clients erect these buildings themselves, or local fencing contractors have the skills and basic tools required to complete the build”. Screw-in ground anchors are used to hold the buildings solidly to the ground allowing the structures to be built on a wide variety of sites and soil types.
The Redpath crop cover frames are also very easy to relocate if required, and this often suits seasonal production or producers of organic crops that wish to move their protection buildings to new soil locations within a few years of production.
The Cold frame has not only been designed for easy construction – it is also quite cost effective for many that need only simple crop cover systems. Glen says that a tunnel around 45-50m long with open ends may cost less than $8000+gst, meaning that they meet the budgets of many users.
The company uses the Durashelter greenhouse cladding on the design which is the heaviest clear extruded greenhouse film sold in New Zealand, at 260 microns thickness. Glen says the covering offers super long life and greater durability in windy conditions. The company also offers a high wind version of the design, and the buildings may be purchased through the company’s website shopping cart www.redpath.co.nz. Buying on-line provides customers with a further discount.
The building may be ordered with roll-up side walls, doors in the end, or have open or fully closed end walls. There is also an option for a roll-up to ridge, to allow full open to air cropping.
