Yonder he goes!
It’s been a whirlwind month for the NZ Horse & Pony team, in between getting our new website, www.horseandponymag.com up and running, taking our tradestand to the Horse of the Year Show, and last but most certainly not least, getting this issue of the magazine ready for the printers.
So a bit sadly for me, my horses have had to take a bit of a back seat over recent weeks, as I waved goodbye to any chance of keeping them fit and schooled, let alone getting to any competitions.
But I do hope to get out on the hunt field a fair bit this season; seeing as we happen to live in the middle of Waikato Hunt country, which is celebrating its 125th Jubilee this year, it would seem a bit rude not to!
Hunting is perhaps the most fun you can have on a horse, in my opinion anyway, and I’d really like to encourage anyone thinking about participating to give it a try. It’s not all about hell-for-leather galloping up and down big hills and jumping scary wire fences and enormous hedges (though you can do that if that’s what you’re in to). Plenty of people take it more sedately, and look at hunting as predominantly a social ride out with like-minded friends, where you get to ride over countryside you’d never normally see. It’s also a terrific way to improve your own and your horse’s balance, partnership and fitness.
This issue of your favourite magazine has a bit of a hunting theme, which is to mark the start of the season around the country. As well as our Equitak Excell Masterclass featuring a young rider learning about jumping spars and riding over rugged terrain, we have an excellent guide to etiquette from hunting expert Sarah Milne, Claire Wilson has interviewed long-time Taupo Hunt member Geordie Bull, and we had fun finding three hunt field images for our Jumping Clinic guru Dale Pederson to comment on.
There’s also a hunt theme to Annie Studholme’s interiors page, as well as our new product page, Shop Front.
I’d love to see your hunting pictures if you do get out there this season; we’ll be running galleries from meets around the country on our website.
