NZ House & Garden - - HOMES -

lucy and nigel scott hadn’t planned to build a barn on their Point Wells property, an hour’s drive north of Auckland (see it on page 78). “We were just going to build a cabin,” says Lucy. But as they found out more about the farming history of their home, they decided a barn would be more appropriate. “It’s almost as if it just took over,” says Lucy. Having admired architect Peter Were’s award-winning design for the Matakana Village Pub, they asked him to come up with a plan for a barn. Built by Kyle Brown, of Warkworth Construction, the space is masculine and rustic, with exposed macrocarpa timber, cowhide accents and a sharp, stainless steel kitchen. The new building has even inspired other local barn-builders. Lucy has received a few requests to visit: “They say, ‘We’re building a barn and heard yours is cool, can we come and have a look?’”

We were talking to a neighbour about how this property used to be a farm. We bought a tractor and it started to take on a homestead feel. And then we decided… it’s got to be a barn! >
