SUBSTITUTE REALITY

Kate Woods is interested in the real, the artificial and combinations of the two. A viewer looking at one of her photographs of a landscape is disquieted by the presence of odd crystalline structures. The forms seem to be huge and to have a greater dimensionality than the other elements in the picture. They seem to hover, do not cast shadows and the scenery is drained of colour. Have creepy, silicon-based aliens arrived and begun sucking the lifeblood out of the land? Fear not, it is faked. Woods makes delicate little folded cardboard sculptures and lays them on faded reproduction photos found in junk shops. She then rephotographs the assemblage to produce her own creations. In some the alien forms are fluttering in the air; in others they stand like icebergs or piles of junked home appliances. Sometimes a touch of paint or a segment taken from a different poster is snuck into a gap, adding to the sense of strangeness. Warwick Brown
