A week at home recovering from an operation launched Aucklander Laine Toia’s weaving career. “I’ve always been creative,” she says. “When I was managing Indie Home Collective’s store I always had Mondays off – I used to refer to them as ‘craft Mondays’.” But after surgery, Laine had to rest, “so I decided I was going to create something. My first weaving was born through that.” Laine’s handyman husband made her a loom and she creates her loose, organic works out of allnatural materials (see more on page 143). She’s now weaving full-time, selling her works on commission and at Indie Home Collective.
