NZ House & Garden - - HOMES -

When choosing an architect: Find someone with similar values and listen to recommendations. Building tip: Make the most of every bit of space, and think about it at the beginning. We used the space under the house, which was being excavated anyway, to add a wine cellar and gym as well as a place to stack Justin’s timber.

This house is eco-friendly: It is built for the sun. We use solar power to heat the water and the tile floors and concrete wall create a great thermal mass that holds the heat. Deep eaves keep the house cooler in summer. Bravest design decision we made: The raw concrete wall in the living room. Our daughter (architect Felicity Brenchley) assured me that I’d love it and she was right.
