Past: Fiona finished a science degree and then went to art school where she studied design and photography. Steered by a teacher towards photography she ended up working as an assistant before branching out on her own. She has been a professional photographer since the mid-1990s, doing much of her work for magazines, including capturing the clever Heeringa family on page 36 of this issue. Present: In a “moment of madness”, she bought a macaron business from a pastry chef who was moving overseas and now combines baking and business ownership with her photography career. She also moved from Auckland to Napier after getting sick of “all the time I was wasting in a car”. A devoted dog- lover (she currently lives with two rescue pooches), she recently finished photographing a book of senior dogs (working title: which will be published in the middle of the year by New Holland Australia. Future: The macaron business (macarons.co.nz) has expanded so much she’s splitting the production into both a bespoke line and a mass- produced one for caterers and large food chains. The export market is also in her sights; so are several ideas for other boutique food businesses. But just in case anyone thinks she’s all work and no play, she has made serious resolutions to a) get back on a horse and b) make sure she does her yoga every day.
