13 July to 23 Septem­ber, New Zealand Por­trait Gallery Te Pukenga Whakaata The life and art of ex­pa­tri­ate New Zealand artist Dou­glas MacDiarmid is saluted in a sur­vey of his work en­com­pass­ing por­trait and fig­u­ra­tive paint­ings and show­cas­ing his bold use of colour and artis­tic di­ver­sity, from re­al­ist fig­u­ra­tion through to geo­met­ric ab­strac­tion. Dur­ing the 1940s, MacDiarmid was part of the Christchurch-based creative bound­ary­push­ers known as The Group where his men­tors in­cluded Evelyn Page, Rita An­gus, Leo Bense­mann and Theo Schoon. The re­view tra­verses the net­work of con­nec­tions the artist has formed with peo­ple and places dur­ing his lengthy in­ter­na­tional ca­reer. nz­por­trait­
