Dane Mitchell: Iris, Iris, Iris
To 24 February, Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki A solo exhibition by Aotearoa’s representative to the 2019 Venice Biennale, Aucklandbased artist Dane Mitchell, focuses on scent production – from traditional Japanese incense to contemporary fragrance technologies – and probes the entanglement of our senses, specifically the ocular and the olfactory. The multi-part installation, curated as a joint project between the Auckland Art Gallery and Mori Art Museum in Tokyo, examines the diverse meanings of iris; a plant, a body part, an adjustable aperture on a camera and a goddess in Greek mythology. Mitchell is renowned for his exploration of the invisible or unseen forces at play in daily lives. aucklandartgallery.com
