How to avoid dirty eggs

NZ Lifestyle Block - - Your Poultry -

It is important that

nesting boxes are kept

clean so eggs stay clean. Never

let hens sleep in nest boxes at

night as most bird’s droppings

are passed at this time, and the

nests become caked with manure. To prevent this

from happening initially it may be

necessary to close off the nest

in the evenings before hens come

in to roost, and then reopen

them when they are asleep.

After a week or two the birds will

have formed their own roosting

habits and won’t seek the

nests at night. Eggs should be

collected twice day to ensure a

freshness, cleaner eggs, and to minimise

the opportunity for

egg eating.
