What is E. cuniculi?

NZ Lifestyle Block - - Feature Rabbit Housing - A Chinchilla Satin and babies.

Encephalitozoon cuniculi is a protozoal parasite that usually infects rabbits - research in 2006 found just over 50% of pet rabbits tested were infected – but it can affect humans too.

Spores are passed on in urine, and then picked up by other rabbits when food or water is contaminated. About 6% of infected rabbits will show symptoms, including: • Eye disease, including cataracts and lens rupture • Head tilt and other neurological signs such as weak hind legs • Urinary incontinence • Kidney disease
