run. She laid a plate of chick feed and a saucer of wa­ter on the floor, then lay Cheeky be­side it with a hot wa­ter bot­tle to keep her warm.

Cheeky cheeped and cheeped and seemed to thrive on all the love and at­ten­tion. The flat floor seemed to help her when it came to stand­ing, but when she fell over Heather was on hand to help her up. Af­ter sev­eral days it was clear that she was putting on weight and seemed to be get­ting a lit­tle stead­ier on her feet.

Cheeky seemed to want to cheat death and fought hard to stay alive. She was soon eat­ing ravenously and limp­ing around her en­clo­sure, quickly grad­u­at­ing from her card­board cage to a bath­room at the end of the house.

She made a fright­ful mess of that bath­room. Heather let her swim in the hand basin and Cheeky took to it like a duck to wa­ter, flap­ping her lit­tle wings and splosh­ing around with ev­i­dent de­light.

At night time she would sit with us in the lounge and snug­gle on the couch. She loved hav­ing her downy feathers stroked and a scratch un­der her chin. Heather laid a towel over her lap for safety, and the two of them would set­tle in.

Cheeky be­came an avid TV viewer and she re­ally looked for­ward to her cud­dles. She soaked up all the love and at­ten­tion
