With some strength­en­ing and with the ad­di­tion of two lon­gi­tu­di­nal runs of tim­ber (boat-builders would call them stringers), it was time to con­tem­plate the plas­tic cov­er­ing. The roll of ‘su­per-heavy’ 254-mi­cron film from Redpath was 10.7m wide and 24m long, cov­er­ing a floor space 23m x 9m, and weighed 63kg. Not the sort of thing you chuck on your shoul­der, race up a lad­der and roll out while bal­anc­ing both you and it atop a 50mm-wide ridge­board!

Af­ter some dis­cus­sion, two foot­ball post-like up­rights were clamped to one end of the struc­ture. Near the top, each up­right sported wooden blocks forming an up­ward-fac­ing re­cess, and above each re­cess hung a pul­ley. It was a sim­ple
