ASIATIC KNOTWEED

NZ Lifestyle Block - - A Country Life -

THIS THICKET-FORMING perennial shrub from Asia has zig-zagging, bluish to reddish stems, and oval, pointed leaves on dark crimson stalks. From December to April it has hanging clusters of white flowers that are followed by glossy brown nuts.

It grows rapidly and extensively from rhizomes and multiple stems that take root when they touch the ground, producing long-lived and well-dispersed seed and can tolerate a wide range of conditions. The dense thickets it forms, especially around waterways, crowd out other species and block access.
