Should you be adding this herb to your hen house?
THE LATEST trendy herb recommended for the hen house is balm of Gilead ( Cedronella canariensis), and is said to make a coop ‘mite proof’ if you just add a handful to fresh straw in nest boxes.
However, a look at the research into balm of Gilead shows there’s no proof it is an insect repellent (of any kind), and its traditional medicinal use is as a remedy for a congested chest, and coughs and colds.
We can tell you it smells beautiful – described as a lemon balm-camphor cross and similar to eucalyptus.
However, it’s also an easily-spread weed and we don’t recommend you plant it.
