lots of potatoes, corn, pumpkins etc.

We ate eels from the creek, wild goat and rabbits, we had watercress and NZ taro that my father planted in streams. We ate taraire berries, totara berries – which were very sweet – sweet tanekaha berries, wild fuchsia berries and tea tree berries which were very astringent-tasting. These were our choice, not dished up to us.

Mum would also cook nikau palms as a vege, the very inside part, with a white sauce, and also raw with vinegar.

We picked wild blackberries by the kerosene tin-full for jam and pies.

I have had a very good life health-wise, so it didn’t do me any harm.
