The 1 big les­son I’ve learned from keep­ing a daily di­ary

Keep­ing this di­ary has pro­vided me and ev­ery­one else with a pub­lic his­tory of my farm­ing ed­u­ca­tion, the ex­pe­ri­ence I’ve gained dur­ing the last 15 years. The only edit­ing I’ve done of early ma­te­rial has been to cor­rect fac­tual er­rors.

That I man­aged my cat­tle so poorly in many of the early years is an un­com­fort­able re­al­ity. Any­one I spoke with at that time told me “you can run more an­i­mals on that much land.” They were wrong, and look­ing back at the pho­to­graphs of the cat­tle of those times has al­ways served as a very strong warn­ing against push­ing things too far again.

I some­times imag­ined a web­site au­di­ence of thou­sands de­vel­op­ing over time but came to realise there’s not that much in­ter­est in ru­ral liv­ing, or per­haps in my par­tic­u­lar way of re­port­ing it.
