This tra­di­tional Scot­tish dish can be served as a veg­etable dish ac­com­pa­ny­ing a main or on its own. I loathe cook­ing veg­eta­bles to death as my mother used to say, and in the case of the cab­bage, its slight crunchy tex­ture goes very well with the smooth­ness of the mashed pota­toes. White pep­per adds a bit of a dis­tinc­tive but not un­pleas­ant bit­ter flavour to any dish, so de­pend­ing on your taste buds, go easy.
