If you chop firewood, you need this book

NZ Lifestyle Block - - Notebook - By Lars Mytting Hachette, hard cover, 192 pages $44.95

When I showed this book to NZ Lifestyle Block’s designer Rebecca, she knew immediately what it was. Her husband Phil has been reading it avidly, having borrowed it from a friend. Another couple of friends were waiting in line for their turn.

It’s a common story when you start mentioning Norwegian Wood – Chopping, Stacking and Drying Wood the Scandinavian Way. It’s riveting. Seriously.

It’s an oddly specific book too. There is a chapter on the right kind of chopping block. On the Sources page are special lists of the axes and chainsaws featured in the pictures.

The book is dedicated to the author’s neighbour Ottar, the man who inspired him to learn and write about firewood (and it ends sadly). You wouldn’t believe a book on the practical aspects of firewood could be moving, emotional, an expression of love and care for nature and people, but it is.
