In late win­ter, cut your tree off at waist height, a neat cut on an an­gle so wa­ter runs off. In spring the stump will send up mul­ti­ple shoots which you then need to thin to one or two and the es­tab­lished root sys­tem will re­place your tree about four times faster than plant­ing a new one.
