A good in­di­ca­tion of a se­vere worm bur­den is anaemia.

Check the mem­brane on the in­side lid of an an­i­mal’s eye (pull down the bot­tom of the lid), and see if it is pink (healthy) or white (anaemic). Anaemia and then per­haps (but not al­ways) scours tends to point to a large worm bur­den and you need to drench the an­i­mal con­cerned im­me­di­ately. Try to get a fae­cal sam­ple at the same time so you can check the ef­fec­tive­ness of the drench and con­firm it is worms and which type/s.
