TRIPLE THE CA­PAC­ITY, YOU SAY?

Just re­cently we spot­ted a very se­ri­ous Toy­ota Star­let KP60 be­ing built by MAK Au­to­mo­tive down in In­ver­cargill. Af­ter do­ing some dig­ging we dis­cov­ered that Paul Dun­can was the man be­hind the drive of this wild V8 con­ver­sion.

Once he’d re­built the Star­let from the ground up, he de­cided he needed more grunt, as he ex­plained. “The 1300cc wasn’t fast enough, so I bought the 1UZ-FE VVT-i en­gine, as I have al­ways liked the idea of a big en­gine in a lit­tle car.”

The pow­er­plant will re­main fac­tory apart from a larger throt­tle body. Af­ter strip­ping the Star­let and fit­ting a short­ened Hilux diff, it was then sent off to the boys at MAK Au­to­mo­tive to start the con­ver­sion. Af­ter the fire­wall was re­moved, the en­gine was mounted back as far as pos­si­ble to im­prove weight dis­tri­bu­tion. A full roll cage has been fab­ri­cated, to en­sure Paul’s kept as safe as pos­si­ble. There is a de­cent amount of fab­ri­ca­tion work yet to com­plete. The seat rails need to be made, the new fire­wall sorted, and the Hal­tech ECU and as­so­ci­ated sen­sors need wiring in to get it all go­ing. Paul hopes to have the project up and run­ning promptly, so he can try out his mad cre­ation.
