TRIPLE THE CAPACITY, YOU SAY?
Just recently we spotted a very serious Toyota Starlet KP60 being built by MAK Automotive down in Invercargill. After doing some digging we discovered that Paul Duncan was the man behind the drive of this wild V8 conversion.
Once he’d rebuilt the Starlet from the ground up, he decided he needed more grunt, as he explained. “The 1300cc wasn’t fast enough, so I bought the 1UZ-FE VVT-i engine, as I have always liked the idea of a big engine in a little car.”
The powerplant will remain factory apart from a larger throttle body. After stripping the Starlet and fitting a shortened Hilux diff, it was then sent off to the boys at MAK Automotive to start the conversion. After the firewall was removed, the engine was mounted back as far as possible to improve weight distribution. A full roll cage has been fabricated, to ensure Paul’s kept as safe as possible. There is a decent amount of fabrication work yet to complete. The seat rails need to be made, the new firewall sorted, and the Haltech ECU and associated sensors need wiring in to get it all going. Paul hopes to have the project up and running promptly, so he can try out his mad creation.
