That strug­gle to­wards the end of a build in re­al­iz­ing that pri­or­i­ties have shifted is one that many of us have en­dured, and it’s a hard one to ac­cept, but that’s how Nick Fowler came to own his ’90 Mazda 323. Pri­mar­ily built by Owen Mei­jer over a pe­riod of 10 years, the for­merly front-wheel-drive 1300cc ex­am­ple now fea­tures a Mazda BPT 1.8-litre turbo, which has been spun to sit in a north–south con­fig­u­ra­tion and de­liver power to the rear. The mo­tor is built top-to-bot­tom, but the crown jew­els of that en­gine bay are, without a doubt, the Tur­bo­net­ics T66 and the wa­ter-to-air in­ter­cooler. The rear has been fit­ted with an R32 LSD mounted on a R32 rear sub­frame that has been nar­rowed by 80mm to ac­cept the new rear-wheel-drive con­fig­u­ra­tion.
