NZ Performance Car: Hey, Greg, we’ve met before at the second birthday meet of the New Zealand GT-Four Owners Club. Tell us why you started the club. Greg: Hi, guys. Yeah we have! The club was formed in 2014 to give New Zealand– based owners and fans of these cars a dedicated place to share our respective love for what is a hugely underrated model. How did you get into them yourself? I’d always been a fan of them, despite having owned the likes of Skylines, Legacys, Supras, Soarers, and a bunch of other cars, so, when my brother asked if I wanted to go halves in an ST165 (first gen) I jumped at it — that car started the real passion that I have for this platform. You’ve owned a few more since then? Yeah, for sure; this is my sixth GT-Four but my first ST205. Hands down, though, my favourite of the lot would have to be my very first one — that one got me hooked on them — but I do also have a very soft spot for the current ST205! What was it about this one that made you buy it? I did all of the Castrol livery signwriting on it for its previous owner, so I knew the car pretty well. The ST165 I had then had been experiencing issues, so I was looking for a reliable daily. We entered into a discussion about a swap, as he had been after an ST165 for a while, and we reached terms; the rest is history. We understand it takes on a lot of driving duties, too? This car gets used for everything. I use it to get me to and from work, out and about for work as required, it’s the weekend run-about, and it’s the road trip car! It is currently my only car, and is a true daily-driven vehicle. No doubt it draws a bit of attention in doing all that? [Laughs] Yeah, I get people taking photos of it, wanting to talk to me about it, kids wanting to sit in it and ‘drive’ it — all sorts. I love that the car can bring a sense of joy to people and spark interest or even just bring back a memory of seeing them rally the GT-Four, of previous ownership of one, or just of many hours playing Sega Rally at the local arcade back in the day.
