NZ Per­for­mance Car: Hey, Greg, we’ve met be­fore at the sec­ond birth­day meet of the New Zealand GT-Four Own­ers Club. Tell us why you started the club. Greg: Hi, guys. Yeah we have! The club was formed in 2014 to give New Zealand– based own­ers and fans of these cars a ded­i­cated place to share our re­spec­tive love for what is a hugely un­der­rated model. How did you get into them your­self? I’d al­ways been a fan of them, de­spite hav­ing owned the likes of Sky­lines, Le­ga­cys, Supras, Soar­ers, and a bunch of other cars, so, when my brother asked if I wanted to go halves in an ST165 (first gen) I jumped at it — that car started the real pas­sion that I have for this plat­form. You’ve owned a few more since then? Yeah, for sure; this is my sixth GT-Four but my first ST205. Hands down, though, my favourite of the lot would have to be my very first one — that one got me hooked on them — but I do also have a very soft spot for the cur­rent ST205! What was it about this one that made you buy it? I did all of the Cas­trol livery sign­writ­ing on it for its pre­vi­ous owner, so I knew the car pretty well. The ST165 I had then had been ex­pe­ri­enc­ing is­sues, so I was look­ing for a re­li­able daily. We en­tered into a dis­cus­sion about a swap, as he had been af­ter an ST165 for a while, and we reached terms; the rest is his­tory. We un­der­stand it takes on a lot of driv­ing du­ties, too? This car gets used for ev­ery­thing. I use it to get me to and from work, out and about for work as re­quired, it’s the week­end run-about, and it’s the road trip car! It is cur­rently my only car, and is a true daily-driven ve­hi­cle. No doubt it draws a bit of at­ten­tion in do­ing all that? [Laughs] Yeah, I get peo­ple tak­ing pho­tos of it, want­ing to talk to me about it, kids want­ing to sit in it and ‘drive’ it — all sorts. I love that the car can bring a sense of joy to peo­ple and spark in­ter­est or even just bring back a mem­ory of see­ing them rally the GT-Four, of pre­vi­ous own­er­ship of one, or just of many hours play­ing Sega Rally at the lo­cal ar­cade back in the day.
