NZRPA – Who we ar e an d what we do
The New Zealand Rugby Players’ Association was founded by New Zealand’s professional players as their independent representative body in 1999.
Through the NZRPA, the players work with the game’s administration to address player welfare and to contribute to the ongoing development of the game. The NZRPA helps players support each other, helps them take advantage of commercial opportunities and helps them understand and deal with life as professional sportspeople, and ensures they have an organised and credible voice at the decision-making table.
Professional rugby players are talented individuals who, with the right environment, leadership and support, have the ability to achieve and inspire success in the game and, more importantly, in life. The NZRPA helps make this a reality. As well as the contest on the field, players face many challenges off it. The NZRPA provides the education and support needed for players to better handle those demands, including a network of providers offering expert advice on a range of issues, including: financial planning, banking, insurance, contracts, legal, property, personal support, personal endorsements, public relations/ media (including social media), behavioural risk, anti-doping, wagering, disciplinary matters and problem solving.
Part of the NZRPA’s job is to ensure those responsible for establishing and enforcing certain rules and regulations (such as anti-doping and wagering) put an equal focus on providing players with effective education programmes.
We encourage and challenge professional players to be proactive about their development on and off the field; to think about their career prospects outside rugby, to put a strong financial plan in place and take responsibility for selfimprovement.
One of our goals is to help all players develop the skills needed to thrive as an individual and a player. Through our rugby network we provide access to the necessary experience, knowledge and resources that help players achieve success in all aspects of life.
