Sacred Heart had a solid 2014, making the 1A semifinals. But the east Auckland Catholic school is fast growing tired of just making the semis. Coach Gus Leger is aiming higher and with 16 returning, that is a sound base from which to launch a campaign. Daniel Tupu, the ‘Tongan Thor’ stole many of the headlines, justifiably, but also took some of the kudos from skilled workers such as Onehunga Havili and Christian Kelleher. All have left school so up needs to step lock Conrad Heath, hooker Joe Casey, No 8 Jack McHugh, halfback Joe Simpkins and loose forward Hoskins Sotutu, among others. “We tend to think 1A is the pinnacle and maybe that’s why we haven’t got the chocolates in the last 50 years,” says Leger.
