Auckland Grammar, after being most unlucky in 2013, won a 66th 1A title in 2014. Coach Askew would love to use that as a springboard for 2015, with 14 of the 28-man squad back. The departures of skipper Robert Harris, lock Sam Ulufonua, centre Rieko Ioane and fullback Shaun Stevenson will be keenly felt, but the onus will then fall on senior men such as lock Connor Wihongi, prop Antonio Ripata and first-five Wiseguy Faiane to lead the way. “We showed great growth over the course of the year. We lost a lot of experience from 2013, so the whisper among other schools was that we wouldn’t be quite as strong. But with substantial growth we were able to achieve all those milestones. It all starts again and the slates are clean,” say Askew.
