Aaron Smith Toilet Scandal

NZ Rugby World - - 2017 The Year In Review -

This whole sordid business was supposedly done and dusted last year. The incident was investigated and Smith was punished – with a suspension – for his actions in a disabled toilet at Christchurch Airport the day after the All Blacks had beaten South Africa.

But during the week of the first Bledisloe Cup test, Australian media released text exchanges between Smith and the woman with whom he had been in the aforementioned toilet.

That forced the New Zealand Rugby Union to re-investigate to see whether Smith had told them everything they needed to know and to be certain he hadn’t lied during the initial investigation.

The new review didn’t find much to make them think they had been conned by Smith, but he had clearly not behaved well so he was issued with a written warning.

An unsavoury business didn’t become any more palatable the second time around.
