A KNIGHT FOR A DAME

NZ Today - - TALKBACK - STORY BY SARAH BRADLEY, PHOTOGRAPHS BY SARAH BRADLEY AND OTAGO DAILY TIMES

About a week before I was due to fly to Dunedin from Wellington to interview Julian Smith from the Otago Daily Times, I read he was in the New Year's Honours list and would now be a “Sir”. Perfect timing I thought, not just because it was recognition of his outstanding character, but also of his legacy of preserving, after five generations, the oldest daily newspaper in the land. The longevity of the paper is what I wanted to find out about. Why had Sir Julian and his forefathers stayed in the newspaper business generation after generation and why had the newspaper endured, and in fact flourished, in the face of pressure from the instant news now available on cell phones, laptops and computers.
