NZ4WD - - REPOWERING & PERFORMANCE -

You can’t miss speedway ace Craig Cardwell’s trick 2013 Toyota Hilux ute. It sits high, wide and handsome on both a body and suspension lift and with its large diameter alloy wheels, wide aftermarket flares, cut-down snorkel and eye-catching matte-finish silver/grey wrap it is the perfect mobile billboard for his business, Cardwell Construction. What you can’t see from the outside, but what is immediately obvious when you climb up and slip behind the steering wheel, is the way a little Jason Frost ‘twincharge’ magic has completely transformed the driving experience. Toyota’s 3.0 litre turbo-diesel is a worthy if a little underwhelming performer in standard form but feels more like a 1UZ V8 petrol in Craig’s ute. Power and torque are prodigious, throttle response is instantaneous and when you put your foot up there’s no smoke! Like a lot of Jason’s customers Craig uses his ute every day and though he felt it needed a little bit more ‘oomph,’ and was prepared to spend a bit of money to get it, he didn’t want to compromise day-to-day driveability or reliability. A chip upgrade seemed like a good place to start so he got on the internet and found ECU Chips. “So I contacted them ” he says, “and got the chip done about a year-and-a-half ago.” Impressed with the difference that made, he then discussed what the next step might be with Jason. Craig was already thinking along the lines of a three inch exhaust and Jason suggested that if that was the case then it would be a good time to add a larger, aftermarket turbo. “From there,” says Craig, “we discussed the supercharger kit. Jason had already done the Isuzu (D-Max) and that went really well and after he had done some more testing I made the decision to get mine done as well.” While the turbo and exhaust upgrade gave him the power and torque gains he both wanted and expected the supercharger gave him instant –and ongoing – access to it. “With just the turbo there is still the lag and the bigger the turbo the more lag. You could probably tune them to be slightly better but it would be very hard. With the supercharger the power comes on the minute you touch the throttle and fills in the hole, if you like, till the turbo has time to spool up.”

Bottom line?

Craig couldn’t be happier with the Jason and Guy's ‘twin-charge’ solution. Absolutely,” he says, “the power and torque from the chip, turbo and exhaust upgrades is still all there but the drivability, especially, around town, is a lot better.”
