Environmental laws prevent modern engines from releasing oil mist or blow-by into the atmosphere, forcing it to be recirculated back into the combustion chamber. The by-product of this process can be a hard carbon substance which gradually builds up around the walls of the vehicle's EGR valve, inlet manifold, turbo bearings and intercooler, causing a severe loss of power and efficiency, and potentially expensive engine damage.
