Popup Shakespeare play delights

- STAFF REPORTER

A POPUP performance of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night delighted audiences at the University of Otago yesterday.

Otago Theatre Studies students delivered excerpts from the 17thcentury comedy in the university’s staff club, and in the Information Services Building.

Fortune Theatre marketing manager Jordan Dickson said the popup excerpts were aimed at attracting interest in the full performances of the play, which will run at the Fortune between July 1 and 22.

During the run, 11 Otago students — three as performers and eight in technical and other production roles — will work alongside professional theatremakers.

Head of the department of music, theatre and performing arts Prof Stuart Young said the internships provided opportunities for students to gain onstage and production industry experience.

‘‘We are in a city where it’s easier to create those close connection between the local community and professional bodies.’’
